Campo Adentro
Campo Adentro is a non-profit and cultural association. It develops projects that examine the role of territories, geopolitics, culture and identity in the relationship between the city and the countryside. Its objective is to launch a cultural strategy in support of rural life. The project provides artists, farmers, intellectuals, rural development agents, policymakers, curators and art critics, amongst others from the rural and urban spheres, with an open platform for presenting their research and practice.
KATIE LEE
Katie is a creative researcher. She is interested in redefining the journey to cultural events as part of the entire experience of art, promoting understanding as to why particular audiences may not be accessing the cultural provision that targets them. Museums, theatres and art centres in Madrid are purposely spread over a wide geographical area in order to promote access. Is this working? Katie aimed to discover the nature of the journeys that people from disadvantaged areas take in order to access the arts.
Katie created a film with accompanying notes documenting the process and questions to stimulate discussion. The primary intent was to document the obstacles and experiences of Madrileños on journeys taken to engage with the arts.

Intermediae
Intermediæ, located at Matadero Madrid, is conceived as a laboratory for the production of projects and social innovation, specializing in visual culture driven by participation. It investigates new ways of involving different audiences in the circles of art and culture. It understands creation as a shared learning space and experimentation as a form of involvement in cultural production. It collaborates with projects committed to a view of community work as a practice that serves to produce innovation and transformation.
KATIA STEWART
Katia is a creative project manager with an interest in design development, community and skill sharing.
She spent 24 hours throughout February hand-making 60 ceramic prototype bees. The intention was to highlight the connection between ‘the hive’ and the way that employees work in Matadero. Over 60 people work in organisations that constitute the ‘the hive’ of Matadero, all working in harmony. Some are strangers, some are visiting, but Matadero operates as a community; working independently but coming together to support each other.
Bees are sociable insects that live in communities and that have to communicate, cooperate and work with each other to survive and thrive. Humans rely on bees to survive due to how they pollinate our crops. We have the same habits as bees and in contemporary society the idea of community, cooperative living, and working, is more important than ever before. The project aimed to help people feel like part of a community, to consider their role in their communities, by visiting the exhibition.

NICOLA ARCHER
Nicky is an artist and community arts practitioner who predominantly works in 3D with glass and metal casting. During her placement in Madrid, she has been investigating how local artists and artist collectives are using recyclable materials and are re-using objects to make art. By undertaking this research project she has been inspired to experiment with ways in which to engage with recyclable materials in her own practice. This has resulted in the growth of a new series of sculptural works incorporating light and shadow that Nicky aims to further develop upon her return to the UK.

HARRY JELLEY
Harry is a poet and arts events producer currently based in Sheffield.
His personal project was inspired by the language that affects the way we see the cities we live in, from roadsigns to lines of prose that come to the front of the mind, or there abouts, when faced with different scenarios. He has written poetry and prose in response to the notion that writing can an influence an approach to a city but that a city also influence the writing.
Here he has attempted to visualize this along with the struggle of a linguistically focused artist surrounded by new language.

Promoción del Arte
Public Administration in charge of the promotion of contemporary art through exhibitions, publications, art fairs, workshops, prizes, scholarships, grants, etc. It manages Tabacalera Espacio Promoción del Arte, a contemporary art centre placed in and old tobacco Factory in the Lavapiés Area, Madrid in which there are temporary exhibitions, workshops and cultural projects involving the artists and the contemporary cultural sector.
HARJEET KAUR
Harjeet is a project manager and curator, she is interested in sustainable art, environmental concerns and effects of austerity measures on consumption of culture. Everybody wants a place in the sun, preferably in Spain. The construction boom supplied demand until the recession hit in 2008. In Spain this has resulted in 3.4 million empty homes in 2013. This boom highlighted a lack of urban planning, with buildings cropping up illegally. Austerity became a popular term after the 2008 financial crisis. With debt levels unacceptably high, many countries were forced to make dramatic cuts to avoid default. From a creative perspective a trend emerged around ´make do and mend´ to upcycle, relearn old crafts, to become more sustainable.
During Harjeet’s placement she developed a proposal for a residency programme for an exchange of ideas with Spanish and UK artists working in the grounds of Tabacalera, Madrid – the old tobacco factory.

PHILLIPA OLDFIELD
Phillipa is Head of programme at Impressions Gallery, Bradford.
Spanish photography remains little known in the UK, perhaps due to Spain’s cultural isolation during the Franco era and the nation’s delayed recognition of photography as a credible art form in comparison with other Europe countries. Now Spain is experiencing a boom in photography, with the emergence of an exciting new generation of image-makers and growing international recognition for established photographers.
As a professional photography curator, Pippa researched the photography sector in Spain, paying particular attention to present-day activity and current tendencies. Through visits to museums, galleries, studios, photo-collectives, specialist schools, talks and festivals, and meetings with curators and photographers, Pippa increased her knowledge of the photography scene and developed contacts and ideas for potential future UK-Spain collaborations. She is currently working with Arts Across Borders colleague illustrator Susan Cairns to develop FotoMap Madrid. This resource, available in English and Spanish, will help photography professionals and enthusiasts visiting Madrid access the city’s diverse and dynamic photography scene. The completed version will be available to download as a PDF from the websites of Madrid venues and portals including Promoción de Arte.

CLAIRE DONALDSON
Claire is a British photographer and her project explores relationships between personal identity and community within Spanish culture through the medium of photography.
Her project was in collaboration with a Spanish friend called Blanca with whom she developed a bond with since arriving in Madrid and it mutually engaged them in the act of documenting her experiences; Claire with her camera and Blanca with her camera phone. The final series of photographs reflects upon the themes from both the perspective of the subject themselves and through the eyes of an outsider learning about the everyday lives of Spanish people.

Katie is a photographer and events coordinator with an interest in environmental issues and community projects.
Her work in Madrid centred around documenting the many different parks and gardens of the city through photography, drawing, painting and collecting objects. She is interested in how the public interact with and use green spaces: how they affect our collective consciousness and improve our health and wellbeing. The project is a work in progress and she plans to continue exploring the same concept in different cities around the world.
