I had the good fortune to be placed with a great company in Seville and the opportunity to be involved in both traditional architectural practice and research projects. However, the scheme also gave me the time, space and opportunity to explore my own projects, both the drawing project '92 Days in Seville' as well as research that led to a shortlisted competition entry imagining a hypothetical new capital city for Australia, work that went on to be exhibited in Canberra in 2013 (CAPITethicAL Exhibition at the Gallery of Australian Design, Canberra).
The Political Circus
The competition was set up by ACT & Australian governments to celebrate the centenary of Canberra. It was a hypothetical re-run of the competition that formed the basis for the current form of Canberra. As a planned city Canberra displays distinct characteristics that reflect Australia as it was 100 years ago. My proposal suggested, as opposed to a static and disconnected capital city the parliament would take the form of a travelling fair, visiting all the key urban centres as well as rural areas. This would allow access and engagement with the political process to as many people as possible in a country as vast as Australia and, just as pertinently, a country with a compulsory voting system.
